Objectives description (assessment criteria)

The aim of the project work is to analyse an issue from an interdisciplinary perspective, utilising approaches drawn from two or more of the four subject areas included in the Basic Studies courses in Social Science. The analysis must be grounded in theory. The project also aims to strengthen the student’s English-language skills through work with written academic wording.

Overall content

The object of the project work is for the student to acquire the following knowledge, skills and competencies:

Knowledge: - Knowledge of social scientific theories, methods and concepts relevant to the chosen problem statement.

Skills: - Skills in carrying out interdisciplinary problem-oriented project work within the field of the social sciences, drawing upon relevant theoretical perspectives from several social scientific disciplines.

  • Skills in utilising several different social scientific methods.
  • Skills to structure and implement relevant and critical literature searches, and apply scientific standards and methods to the handling of citations and references.
  • Skills in communicating on social scientific issues, methods and analyses.

Competencies: - Competency to substantiate the project’s methods, and critically reflect upon the possibilities and limitations implied by their use. - Competency to reflect on the project results and place them in perspective within a broader academic context. - Competency to study both independently and in co-operation with others, and share knowledge and reflections.

Prerequisite for taking the exam

A condition for being allowed to take the examination is that the student meets the following requirements:

a) The student has participated in a Problem Field Seminar, cf. section 54 (2) and 54 (4).

b) The student has participated in Internal Evaluation, cf. section 54 and 54 (3).

c) The student has submitted a study portfolio, cf. section 53.

d) The student has had a written group assignment approved in the project workshop, cf. section 10 (5) and 10 (6).

Form of examination

The project work corresponds to 15 ECTS credits. The requirements towards the size of the project report depend on the group size:

In groups of from two to three members, the required size is 96,000 to 144,000 characters, all included except appendices, corresponding to 40 to 60 standard pages at 2,400 characters per page.

In groups of from four to five members, the required size is 120,000 to 168,000 characters, all included except appendices, corresponding to 50 to 70 standard pages with 2,400 characters per page.

In groups of six members, the required size is 144,000 to 192,000 characters, all included except appendices, corresponding to 60 to 80 standard pages at 2,400 characters per page.

If the project report deviates from the above-specified number of characters, it will be refused assessment, which means that the student(s) cannot participate in the examination, and one examination attempt will be deemed to have been used up. Students whose project report has been rejected due to deviation from the size requirement will be given 24 hours to adapt the report to the required size, after which the project report is resubmitted and the students are registered for the repeat examination.

The project report must be provided with a summary in English, with a maximum size of one standard page at 2,400 characters per page. The summary must be included as an appendix to the project report.

The project work is assessed by an oral examination. The examination is subject to internal moderation. The examination takes the form of a group examination for the members of the project group. The examination is based on the students’ project report in the second semester. The examination takes the form of a conversation between the students and the examiner(s). The students must be examined on the basis of the entire project report, in such a way as to allow for individual assessment. Each student in the group gives a brief oral presentation on a self-selected topic relating to the project. The presentation must have a duration of no more than five minutes per student.

30 minutes are reserved in the examination per student, including assessment time. An individual assessment is undertaken of each student’s performance. The grade awarded is based on a combined assessment of both the project report and the oral examination.

The assessment takes account of whether the student’s work has been satisfactory in relation to the objectives stated in 15 (3) and 24 (3). In the assessment of BP 2, in addition to the academic content, account is also taken of the student’s writing skills, which are included at a weight of 10%.

(2) A single grade is awarded from the seven-point scale.

(3) The examination corresponds to 15 ECTS credits.
