Detailed description of content |
The world is becoming increasingly internationalised. This course examines internationalisation along two dimensions. The first dimension is horizontal and focuses on three basic parameters: governance, policy and policy. The second dimension is vertical and addresses how policy is made and applied at different levels, including global, regional, national and subnational level. To explain internationalisation, we need to understand the parameters of these two dimensions and especially the interactions between them. This course compares and explains variations in the political decision-making process between and within the different levels. The focus is on how policy is designed, decided and implemented to address problems such as the economic crisis, the refugee crisis and migration, resolution, climate change and international terrorism, as well as other policies regulating the everyday life and welfare of citizens. The course is divided into six main parts. • The first part introduces logical comparison and the role theory plays when performing policy studies. • The second part focuses on the global level where different modus operandi of international organisations are compared and how organisations produce and apply specific policies. • The third part examines the regional level by comparing regional organisations and looking at how these institutions produce different policies. • Part four examines the national level. Here, political systems are compared in different countries as well as how they produce and implement specific policies. • The fifth part studies the subnational level in which subnational entities in different political systems are compared and their role in the policy-making process is considered. • The sixth and final part studies the interplay between levels and state society, policy and politics. |
