ACADEMIC CONTENT | |
Overall objective |
|
Detailed description of content |
Description for the Fall 2022: (Anti-)Racism in Theory and Practice What do the apartheid system in South Africa, the Holocaust, Palestine, and the so-called refugee problem in Denmark have in common? All are examples of institutionalized racism and its serious consequences. At the same time, these examples point to racism as a globalized problem that takes different shapes and affects us subjectively, politically, socially and economically both at local levels as well as across national borders. Understanding how racism shapes the world is therefore essential to analyze, discuss and critically assess a broad spectrum of issues across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and most importantly to effectively address and dismantle it. The course provides students with theoretical, methodological and practical tools to conceptualize and analyze racism and to understand the interplay between theory and practice in this regard. As such, the course involves academic and activist perspectives and analyses. This gives the students insight into a rich and varied field that is socially relevant and contributes with important input to understanding current problems in Denmark and the world - and its alternatives. |

Overall plan and expected work effort |
Workload The entire workload of a 5 ECTS course is 135 hours. In order to avoid a heavy workload of 49 hours in each of the two weeks of the course, we will assign readings and videos in moodle that you should initiate reading and watching early in the semester. Learning activities The course largely works as a study circle, where teaching and learning to a very large degree is based on student presentations and dialogue between and among teacher and students. Exercises and peer feedback may also be applied. The chosen working methods will be announced by the lecturer at the start of the course. |
