ACADEMIC CONTENT
Overall objective

The project-oriented internship allows students to acquire first-hand knowledge about academic practices at the relevant labor market and tests their academic qualifications in relation to the work functions they are expected to undertake upon graduation.

The project-oriented internship consists of a stay with a relevant employer as well as internship supporting activities that in total sum to 800 hours work. The student is responsible for securing the project-oriented internship position and the practical matters associated with the internship.

The project-oriented internship must be pre-approved by the board of studies before it is started. The intern’s main tasks must be described, and they must lie within the subject area of the programme.

Detailed description of content

The learning during the internship is achieved through a mix of practical tasks, reflections on the intersection between theory and practice and through independent preparation of the internship report. The preparation of the internship project takes place under the supervision of an internship supervisor.

Course material and Reading list

Determined individually in collaboration between student and supervisor.

Overall plan and expected work effort

The student is responsible for securing an internship position and the practical matters associated with the internship. This includes ensuring that both the internship tasks at the workplace and the commitments to the university are fulfilled.

The internship must be pre-approved by the Board of Studies before the start of the internship period. It is expected that ¾ of the semester’s workload will be dedicated to the internship tasks, while ¼ will be allocated to the commitments at the university (equivalent to approx. 540-600 hours at the place of internship and approx. 200 hours at the university). The intern’s main tasks must be described, and they must lie within the subject area of the study programme.

The internship project’s research question must be related to theoretical or empirical issues from the subject area of the discipline, which would be investigated during the internship. The internship project must be individually prepared, and the complete written product must include:

  • An executive summary of a maximum length of 4,800 characters including spaces. The summary must take into account the contents of the project and the significant points that a reader should be aware of.

  • A main part: including a mandatory literature review, which provides an overview of the most recent research in the academic field that the internship project deals with (i.e., a state-of-the-art literature review). The literature for the project consists of a total of 650 pages selected by the student in collaboration with the supervisor.

See also the description of the internship report under type of examination.

ASSESSMENT
Overall learning outcomes

  • Having competed an internship, the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate substantial empirical knowledge of societal subject matters relevant for the host, particularly regarding the subject matter the student chooses to analyse in the assignments for the university.

  • critically reflect on how the host organisation functions internally, and how it has organised its tasks, procedures, and decision-making processes that the student has been involved in

  • combine academic insights (theories, methods, approaches) from the programme and use these to solve practical issues and tasks for the host.

  • argue for the selection of academic literature to shed light on a chosen problem area.

  • plan, complete, and deliver concreted tasks commissioned by the internship host.

  • work analytical with empirical data producing new knowledge

  • describe concrete challenges relevant for the host and its activities and subject-area and identify and describe suggested solutions

  • independently plan and complete deliverables for the university, while working also for the host

  • take responsibility and act professionally within the working community.
