ACADEMIC CONTENT
Overall objective

The project-oriented research internship is designed to provide the student with knowledge of specific research practices such as empirical data collection, analysis and research planning within a defined field of research related to media and communication studies. The course includes completion of an internship in a research institution, research project and/or research group, corresponding to 600-800 hours of work, as well as participation in internship-supporting activities. The student chooses an internship on the basis of professional interest and relevance to the education program. Before the course can begin, the student must have an internship agreement approved by the study board. The intern’s main activities must be described in the application, and be within the scope of the program’s academic field of study. At the completion of the internship the student is responsible for delivering a portfolio.

ASSESSMENT
Overall learning outcomes

At the end of the project-oriented research internship, the student is able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and understanding of typical tasks and forms of work at a research institution, including tasks related to specific research projects and/or research groups

  • Apply and discuss key theories and methods in media and communication studies

  • Solve specific research-related tasks and problems, such as describing, analysing, discussing, evaluating research material and processes by using the theories, concepts and methods of the education programme

  • Critically reflect on specific organizational working conditions and mediated communication practices related to research, including one’s own role, work endeavors, and learning outcomes

  • Independently take responsibility for engaging constructively and reflectively in complex, creative, and unpredictable research tasks and for their own professional development and specialisation, including acquiring qualifications to start a specialized researcher education programme such as a PhD education

Prerequisites
Form of examination
Project-oriented internship based on an individual written product

The character limit of the written product is: 60,000-84,000 characters, including spaces.
The character limits include the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

Assessment: 7-point grading scale
Form of Re-examination
Samme som ordinær eksamen / same form as ordinary exam
Type of examination in special cases
Examination and assessment criteria (implemented)

In the internship report, the student must select, describe, and analyze a relevant problem related to an aspect of the research encountered during the research internship.

The internship report should demonstrate the extent to which the student can: • Formulate a research question that demonstrates an understanding of the research work in the specific context where the internship took place • Select, apply, and discuss relevant theories of science, theories, and methods within media and communication research relevant to a self-chosen problem • Work analytically with empirical data – typically from their own research practice during the internship – and, based on this, generate new knowledge in relation to the chosen issue • Demonstrate critical reflection on academic discussions during the internship and on their own role in research processes related to the internship
